In line with recent law changes on pet micro-chipping we recently spent a couple of hours at the local vets with our pet cats.
Turning it into an Educational Experience
We have always been passionate about turning everyday life experiences into opportunities for learning and education. This was no exception.
Demonstration of correct animal handling procedures
I demonstrated to Blossom the correct way to pick-up and hold a pet cat securely for a simple medical procedure, vaccination and health check.
Discussion on the need for micro-chipping our pets and the procedure involved
We discussed with Blossom why micro-chipping is so important and the legal guidelines surrounding this. We also discussed the entire procedure as it was taking place so she could obtain a multi-sensory learning experience.
Discussion and demonstration of how to perform a basic health check on a pet cat
After the microchip insertion procedure, I demonstrated how to perform a simple health check on a pet cat, explaining what I was looking at and the signs of healthy and unhealthy pets. Blossom found the entire thing fascinating and it was fun to practice my own skills in this area.
Progression and Learning
The entire experience ties in many subjects and aligns well with our Animals, Plants and Environmental studies course. Not only did we cover science and responsible animal ownership, we also touched on the job roles of Veterinary Assistants. This was also a good opportunity to allow Blossom to practice socialising with the people we may encounter in our everyday lives. We can revisit this subject in the future, with more in-depth discussion and exploring potential future job roles and careers.
